BALTIMORE — A coalition of community organizations, in coordination with families of 40 Central American mothers detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, will hold a press conference and rally Friday, April 10, at 3 p.m. EST at Hopkins Plaza of the George Fallon Federal Building, 31 Hopkins Plaza, Baltimore, MD 21201. The action demands their immediate release and condemns ICE’s targeting of migrants.
On March 5 and 6, forty Central American women — mostly mothers from the Baltimore area — presented for their Intensive Supervision Appearance Program check-ins at the Baltimore ICE field office in the Fallon Federal Building. All were in compliance with immigration protocols and had no criminal records.
As they presented themselves, the women were detained, put in chains, and held in the Baltimore holding cell without the opportunity to defend themselves, in what organizers have called a silent raid.
While held at the Fallon Building, the women had no running water, no menstrual supplies and no toilet. The food they were given was spoiled and contained insects. Women who were menstruating were left to use only toilet paper. The ICE holding cell at the Fallon Building had previously been exposed by migrants’ justice organizations and the anti-ICE movement in Baltimore, leading to a federal lawsuit by the Amica Center urging action to end overcrowding, medical neglect, and unsanitary conditions.
On March 8, ICE transferred the women out of the Baltimore holding cell. On March 9, congressional representatives arrived at the Fallon Building to conduct an investigation of the facility and found it empty. ICE had shipped the women across the country both to conceal the conditions of their detention and to isolate them from their families, legal resources and support networks.
In the face of ICE pressure to force self-deportation and separation from their children and families, the mothers organized collectively, calling themselves Las Madres Unidas en la Lucha — the Mothers United in the Struggle.
Currently, approximately 10 of the women remain detained at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, Washington. Others have already been deported or compelled into choosing self-departure. Organizers warn that additional transfers may be underway to further isolate the women from legal counsel and community support.
Nationally coordinated press conferences and community actions are planned in Tacoma and Baltimore.
Release Las Madres Unidas en la Lucha now! Stop their transfers! Stop their deportations! End the targeting of migrant women and children!
