Forty-six years ago, Zimbabwe won its freedom from a racist colonial dictatorship propped up by the United States and Britain. On Sept. 19, activists gathered in New York City’s Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza — across from the United Nations headquarters — to declare that Zimbabwe will never be a colony again!
People came to show their support for Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was in New York to address the UN General Assembly. The freedom fighter is the world’s only head of state to have been on death row. His sentence was commuted to years in prison.
Zimbabwe gained its independence by waging a long revolutionary war called a Chimurenga. Thousands of Africans died during this struggle.
The rally was called by the December 12th Movement, Friends of Zimbabwe, and the Zimbabwe African National Union / Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) chapters in the United States and Canada.
People marched within the park while chanting “Long Live Zimbabwe!” They carried Zimbabwe flags and the African Liberation flag, designed by the Honorable Marcus Garvey.
Speakers from the December 12th Movement, ZANU-PF, the Palaver Collective, PAL-Awda and Struggle – La Lucha newspaper denounced the cruel sanctions imposed by the United States and Britain against the African country.
The people of Zimbabwe’s “crime” was to take back their land and farms from white settlers. The sanctions are no different than Trump welcoming racist whites from South Africa who mourn the overthrow of apartheid.
These measures, like those against Cuba, were meant to strangle Zimbabwe. With the support of other African countries and the People’s Republic of China, Zimbabwe is growing. Zimbabwe will never be a colony again!
