The International Legal Community Speaks Out in Defense of Cuba
International Association of Democratic Lawyers Press Conference
Date: Tuesday, June 9
Time: 9:00 a.m. EDT / 3:00 p.m. CEST

On June 9, representatives of legal and human rights organizations from around the world will
convene a press conference to denounce ongoing violations of international law by the United
States against Cuba and the failure of the international community to take meaningful action to
stop them.
The United States continues to threaten Cuba while imposing unilateral coercive economic
measures designed to destabilize the country and facilitate regime change. In recent months,
restrictions on fuel shipments have further intensified the hardships faced by the Cuban people,
with severe consequences for daily life.
For more than three decades, the United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly called
for an end to the U.S. blockade of Cuba, with the United States and Israel consistently standing
alone in opposition to the international consensus. While these annual resolutions represent a
powerful condemnation of the blockade, symbolic measures alone are insufficient. International
law imposes obligations on states to act in the face of ongoing violations.
The press conference will address:
● The more than 60-year U.S. blockade of Cuba;
● The U.S. military buildup and continuing threats against Cuba;
● The false indictment of Raúl Castro, a politically motivated pretext for escalating hostility
and military threats;
● Ongoing violations of Cuban sovereignty;
● The increasing criminalization of Cuba solidarity work in the United States; and
● The responsibilities of states and international institutions to uphold international law and
defend the Cuban people’s right to self-determination.
Speakers will include representatives of legal and human rights organizations from multiple
countries, who will discuss avenues for international action and accountability.
