New Orleans socialists go to working class with message of resistance
New Orleans, May 29 — During the evening rush hour on Friday, around a dozen activists gathered near the bus stops at Canal and Elk streets, calling for resistance to Trump’s war plans against Cuba. Organizers from Workers Voice Socialist Movement, Struggle for Socialism Party/Struggle – La Lucha, Louisiana Workers Councils, and the Party for Socialism and Liberation took to the mic and handed out our leaflets at this major transportation hub for workers in the downtown hospitality sector.
Speakers emphasized that the billionaires’ government in Washington that has created the humanitarian catastrophe in Cuba with its criminal blockade is the same government that is attacking us here. The Washington government that is strangling Cuba is taking away our access to health care and education, and driving up prices with never-ending war.
Working-class and oppressed people in the United States have the same enemies as the Cuban people — and those enemies are in Washington and Wall Street.
Visiting activist John Parker — a California District 37 congressional candidate and organizer with the Los Angeles Harriet Tubman Center for Social Justice and Struggle for Socialism Party — spoke about the attacks on Black, Brown, Indigenous and working-class people’s voting rights. He made the connection between the U.S. ruling class’s designs to take over and exploit Cuba and their attempts to stifle any resistance to their rule here. Parker said that if they can get away with taking away Black people’s voting rights in Louisiana, voters’ rights all over the country are in danger.
Gavrielle Gemma with Workers Voice stressed the importance of going directly to the working class with the message of struggle. Going right to the bus stops and even door-to-door is a way to bypass the billionaire-controlled algorithms.
Popular chants included “Hands off Cuba!” and “Money for health care/child care/education, not war!”
