Thousands of people packed Manhattan’s Union Square on March 7, united in opposition to the U.S. war against Iran. Hundreds of signs were carried by the protesters along with Iranian and Palestinian flags.

The action was called by the Palestinian Youth Movement, the ANSWER anti-war coalition and The People’s Forum. The rally began with chants and drumming.

Speakers denounced the murder of 165 schoolgirls at the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ school, describing the massacre as a “double tap” war crime, in which a second strike is timed to kill survivors and first responders.

Among the speakers was Taher from the PYM who described how the Iranian government and people have unconditionally supported the Palestinian struggle. Bella, an Iranian-American woman, told of the suffering caused by the U.S. and Zionist bombings.

Andre Easton, the socialist candidate in the Bronx’s 15th congressional district, angrily spoke how he as a teacher and father sees the schools and social services being starved by the U.S. war machine. Manolo De Los Santos of The People’s Forum attacked the lies being used to promote the new war.

People marched out of Union Square chanting “no boots on the ground, no bombs in the air, U.S. out of everywhere!” People took over both 14th Street and Sixth Avenue with their ranks stretching blocks.

A brief closing rally was held at Herald Square, the center of New York City’s busiest shopping district.
