Why this moment matters:
Imperialism is on the march: the escalation of the blockade against Cuba, genocidal settler-colonial warfare targeting Iran, Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria, murders of fishermen based on lies in the Caribbean, sanctions and threats across the Global South. And today, the Trump administration has now launched the “Shield of the Americas” and the “Americas Counter Cartel Coalition,” a new military alliance announced at a summit in Miami that brings together heads of state from across the region to coordinate lethal force against the nations of Nuestra America resisting imperialism, framed as a campaign against cartels and foreign influence. This represents a dangerous escalation of U.S. interventionism in the hemisphere, wrapped in the rhetoric of security and sovereignty. The same empire wages war on all fronts. Our resistance must meet it everywhere. That is why the Week of Action in Defense of Cuba is so urgent: it calls us to move beyond solidarity in theory and into action, showing up in our communities and in the streets alongside the Cuban people.
Already, dozens of actions are planned across the country and virtually: California, Maine, South Carolina, Florida, Texas, Nevada, Minnesota, Colorado, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Missouri, New York, Maryland, and more. This is what unity in action looks like.
We carry the spirit of those who came before us. The Bronze Titan Antonio Maceo, who 148 years ago this Sunday, March 15th, refused a peace with slavery and without independence. And Fidel, whose centennial we prepare to celebrate, whose humility, clarity, and rigorous self-criticism revealed the living human center of revolution. Cuba has shown up for the world – politically, materially, culturally, militarily, socially. Now it is our moment to show up for Cuba.
